The $2 is credited whether the spin returns $0 or $500. Over a session of 1,000 spins at $1 each ($1,000 wagered), the same maths gives $40 of expected loss and $20 of rakeback — an effective edge of 2% instead of 4%.
Two things follow. First, rakeback is worth more on higher-edge games in absolute dollars, because there is more edge to refund.
