Blockchain Confirmations Explained
What blockchain confirmations are, why platforms require them, how many you need for deposits and withdrawals, and confirmation times across major networks.

You sent your deposit ten minutes ago. The block explorer shows it confirmed. Your Duel balance has not updated. The missing piece is confirmations — the platform waits for a specific count before crediting, and that count is higher than the one confirmation you see on the explorer.
What a confirmation actually is
When you send crypto, your transaction enters the mempool — a waiting area for unconfirmed transactions. Validators pick transactions from the mempool and include them in a new block. That inclusion is the first confirmation.
Each subsequent block added to the chain on top of your transaction's block adds another confirmation. Two confirmations means your transaction's block plus one block after it. Ten confirmations means nine blocks stacked on top.

Why platforms require multiple confirmations
Blockchain reorganisations (reorgs) occur when two validators produce blocks at similar times and the network temporarily follows one chain before switching to the longer one. A transaction in the abandoned chain effectively disappears.
More confirmations reduce reorg risk:

These are averages. Bitcoin blocks can take anywhere from one to sixty minutes. Ethereum post-merge is more consistent. Solana is the fastest for practical purposes.
What you see at each stage
Sent — 0 confirmations
Your wallet shows the transaction as pending or unconfirmed. The block explorer may show it in the mempool. The platform has not detected it yet.
First confirmation
The transaction is in a block. The explorer shows 1 confirmation. Some fast chains credit at this point; most platforms wait for more.
Approaching threshold
Confirmations accumulate block by block. You can watch the count rise on a block explorer. See how to check a transaction.
Threshold reached — credited
The platform's system detects enough confirmations and credits your balance. This is automatic — no action needed from you.
Why your deposit might seem stuck
- The transaction is still unconfirmed — low fee during congestion; check the explorer
- Confirmations are accumulating but below the platform threshold — wait
- The platform requires more confirmations than you expected — check deposit confirmation times
- The transaction confirmed on-chain but the platform has not credited — possible platform-side delay; see deposit not showing up
- You sent on the wrong network — confirmations on the wrong chain do not count
Unconfirmed transactions
If your transaction has zero confirmations for an extended period:

Confirmations on withdrawals
Withdrawals follow the same principle in reverse. The platform broadcasts a withdrawal transaction and waits for confirmations before marking it complete. Withdrawal confirmation requirements may differ from deposit requirements.

How to track confirmations yourself
Rather than refreshing your balance, track the transaction on a block explorer:
- Copy the transaction hash (TX ID) from your wallet
- Paste it into the appropriate explorer (Etherscan, Tronscan, Solscan, etc.)
- Read the confirmation count
- Compare against the platform's required threshold
